ANI3001M Animation - Pre - Production Module: An Introduction to the Project

So after reading through the brief this morning, I have had a change of heart regarding what I want to do this year. Part of me feels that I will be missing out on a great opportunity to produce a film that I will be really proud of, whilst the other part of me feels that I will be playing it too safe with producing a demo reel again. Thinking about why I've had this sudden change of heart, I've thought back to our first year stings and our Norman on the Road films, and thinking about what I really enjoyed about them. The aspect of creating and designing everything from the story to the characters and the environments to the animation was something I really loved doing! Although they aren't great stories, nor are they executed brilliantly, I still enjoyed producing them as well as what directing something allowed me to experience is great. Deep down, my true passion is animation, and seeing a character come to life but I feel that if I don't produce a film this year, I will be letting myself down a bit.

In terms of how I want to go about directing my short film, I've definitely decided I want to work on my own. Although a very important aspect of directing is actually directing a team to produce the film, I  enjoy the control over everything that goes into creating the film and seeing it come to life on screen. Over the summer period, I have been researching post-grad options and something I am really interested in is taking a Masters degree in directing. Although animation is where I want to go, I feel confident enough in my ideas and how I tell my stories to become an animation director in the future. Relating this back to the project, I feel that if I really knuckle down with the story idea and produce it to the very best of my skills, it will help me in good stead when it comes to applying for a Masters degree in several years time. For the mean time, I want to develop and improve my animation skills, as well as directing.

For the next 7 weeks, our task is to produce all the pre - production for our short films. This includes research, initial ideas, story telling, sketching, concepts, developing a suitable visual style, character and layout development and of course, storyboarding.

Next week we have to pitch our film ideas to the whole class as well as Sultan and Hillary. My first task is to define the story and general mood of the story I have in mid just right, in accordance to my target audience; families. I want my film to be suitable for everyone to watch and for it to be funny. My film will be a slapstick comedy and will be heavily influenced by my childhood favourite cartoons such as Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo and Wacky Races.

I am wanting to develop my graphic art style, as well as After Effects skills and improve my film directing during the course of this year. I am also passionate about animation, so I will be producing an animation demo reel as well as this small film. I have to balance my time between the two so I am aiming for the film to be about one and a half minutes long (excluding title and credits). I think this is realistic for me as I feel confident in my drawing, animating and composing skills to pull this off to a good standard that I'll be proud of.
