Research - Format - 2D vs. 2.5D

After comparing 2D, 3D (CG) and now 2.5D, I have to make a decision as to what format I want my animated short to be in. I have to decide fairly quickly as time is running out too. For me to make a decision, I have thought about what my particular skill set is and take into consideration the difficulty of each format.

In terms of enjoying the project, I have to find enough work for me to last the year without being overwhelmed with it. I do like producing both 2D and CG animation and I think I am good at both and enjoy aspects of both formats. In terms of making my animated short however, I think that if I decide to use one or the other formats, I won't be reaping the benefits of both formats.

If I were to go with sole 2D animation, I don't think the quality of the actual film will be too great. If I were to with CG animation, I'll be able to create scenes well, but I won't be able to create full character rigs as I have little experience with rigging and isn't something I'm greatly interested in taking further.

This leaves 2.5D animation, I would feel confident in animating 2D characters with CG backgrounds but the troubles would lie with the textures of the models and successfully compositing these two formats together so they look indistinguishable.

For me to go with the 2.5D approach to the project, I will have to do a couple tests within the next couple of weeks. I think that after seeing the result and making an estimate at how long it will take me to create a whole film using the 2.5D approach, I will be able to decide between full 2D or 2.6D animation.
