The Audience - The Emotional Arc Throughout My Film

I want the audience to feel sympathetic for the protagonist Betty throughout the entire film right up until we see her getting what she deserves - to celebrate New Year's Eve with her friends.

The emotional arc for my story revolves entirely around the waitress wanting to go home for midnight so there is the element of a time constraint which is shown throughout the film using ticking clocks and her thoughts and emotions for example when she looks up to the party next door and when the man orders everything off the menu. Here's a breakdown of my story in terms of what emotions and thoughts I want the audience to feel throughout my film:

  • excited - we see it's New Year's Eve - it's a big event!
  • sorry for waitress - we see her alone and bored. She appears young and full of life, she should be partying!
  • excited again - she's about to go home and party, we feel positive and happy for her
  • annoyed and uncomfortable - obstacle! - The man enters ...
  • happy for Betty - there is a money opportunity - to make a quick buck
  • hopeful - still time to serve man, make money and go home in time
  • annoyed and frustrated for her - the obstacle grows (man orders more food)
  • really hopeful - end of service, last 5 minutes, get money, go home
  • angry - at the man, he has used the waitress for free food, man thinks he's won, we want waitress to make him pay!
  • intrigue - waitresses emotions and face - how will it be solved? - feel tension ...
  • payoff - the man is embarrassed and waitress partying (like the tables have turned almost)
  • and finally - a happy ending for waitress
